Hello,
Very busy week helping ventilator initiatives around the globe and securing funding for this initiative when we get to the scale production phase.
We were very lucky this week to obtain 9,000 million pesos (2 Million US) funding from Postobon and 1,000 Million (about 200K USD) from Brinsa. These two are consumer products companies from Colombia who believe in how we can help through innovation to solve this crisis. We had also had an $ 80,000 USD grant from Bancolombia, one of Colombia's largest banks. This is more fuel for this project to move forward quickly.
We have learned many interesting things over the past few days. so we have learned several things:
1.) it is incredibly hard to guarantee PEEP pressures with the valves in disposable Ambu bags. The compliance in the system is too high and, at least the ones we have tested have a variation of around 5cmH2O.
2.) Disposable PVC Ambu bags will last around 3 days in continuous ventilation, after this, they will stop returning to their original shape. so anyone using these ventilators in ARDS has to know and track this durability as patients tend to be ventilated for longer time frames. We are currently working on the ideation of more alternatives to replace the Ambu bag with something else that can be more durable.
Also as the developments advance we are starting to be ready for testing of the ventilator concepts in live animal models. As the designs get more finalized we can share more information. This video by Mauricio Hernandez from the UdeA team made this awesome video, one of several explaining the whole principle of the pneumatically actuated ventilator concept. Sorry, the video is in Spanish but I think this will be of great help for people around the world who want to replicate this model.
